Guidelines for use of Instruction Rooms -
University Libraries, University Park

Gateway Lab, Paterno 203, 302, 403, 514, and Pattee W211A and W315

Purpose of Instruction Rooms

The primary purpose of the University Libraries’ Instruction Rooms and Labs is for teaching in the library, including instruction in the use of the libraries materials, resources, research strategies, and information literacy. This includes Library Studies credit classes and all course-related instruction. While the primary audience for these rooms is students, a knowledgeable staff is a prerequisite for library teaching and public service, and therefore staff training in library content and presentations are also included (Note: the primary function of 108 Pattee is staff training – please contact I-Tech). Faculty outside the Libraries may also use these rooms for teaching library content.

Selecting a Room

Size: When selecting a room please choose a room that is appropriate for the size of the class. The large hands-on labs are needed for larger classes, so please do not book them for small classes, even if the location is more convenient for you.

Type: When planning hands-on learning activities for students, select a hands-on lab. Otherwise, please book an instruction room without student computers (Paterno 203 and 403, Pattee 325, and Foster Auditorium)

Scheduling Instruction Rooms

Librarians may book instruction rooms for library-related classes through Oracle by inviting an appropriate room as a resource. In the "title" of the request, please include the course number and the number of students in the class. If you have questions about scheduling a room, please contact the staff assistant at 865-9257.

As soon as you have booked the room, please record the class in the "Classes" database. This will ensure that service desk staff anywhere in the library can direct students to the proper room when questions arise at the last minute. The classes database will create a record of the class for statistical purposes and will contribute to tracking for yearly faculty activity reports. It will also create a student evaluation that can be used in a lab at the end of the class session. Please contact Library Learning Services (865-9257) if you need an introduction to this database — or assistance with entering your classes.

Use by faculty outside the library

Requests for use of the room by non-library faculty to teach library related topics may be accommodated for one or two class sessions (but not for an entire semester.) Requests for rooms should be directed to Library Learning Services (865-9257). A librarian will be available to teach the class. However, if the faculty member wishes to teach the class on their own, they will be required to get an introduction to the room and its equipment before using the room. Please contact Library Learning Services (865-9257) to schedule this training.

Responsibility for room use

The person booking an instruction room is responsible for knowing the proper use of the room and the equipment. Please contact Library Learning Services (865-9257) to schedule this training if needed.

The person booking the room is also responsible for turning off the data projector and securing the equipment, including remote keyboard, mouse and remote control for data projector, in the podium and locking the podium and room at the end of the class session.

Scheduling of rooms for meetings and non-instructional purposes

Due to heavy demand, these rooms are needed primarily for library instruction during the semesters. Late in the semester and between semesters are most likely times for such non-instructional uses of the rooms to be approved. Please contact Library Learning Services (865-9257) with questions.

Student and other use of rooms

Other than when library instruction classes are in session, the Gateway lab is open and available for use.

Paterno 302 and 403 are locked when not in use for a class. They are available for student use according to policies established by the respective subject libraries.

Paterno 203, 514, and W211A and W315 Pattee are locked and not available when classes are not in session.
