Libraries in Rome - Online Catalogs

Even if you still can't conjugate "essere," you should still try to visit at least one of these Italian libraries as part of your semester in Rome. A few have staff members who speak English, if not, please refer to the Italian Phrases for Library Users guide that we have compiled for your use.

Below is a brief list of Libraries in Rome that have Online Catalogs.

La Sapienza Online Catalog

The University of Rome-La Sapienza has an architecture program and a system of Architecture Department related libraries. You can search all of La Sapienza’s architecture libraries at once (in English) via La Sapienza’s online catalog.

In order to search the online catalog for the La Sapienza libraries in english, simply click on the British Flag in the upper left hand corner of their catalog page.

Bear in mind that this online catalog covers all of the La Sapienza Libraries. If you select Architettura from the System box, you will narrow you search to all of their Architectural Related Libraries, which include the five libraries that we have included above as well as four others. You can also select (or de-select) individual or multiple libraries from the Library box.

The Library Abbreviations used in the Library box for the five libraries that we have listed above for you are as follows:

Italian Union Catalog

The Italian Union Catalog provides access to the Italian National Library Service, historical catalogues (with digitized cards of the Italian Bibliographic heritage), specialized catalogues, foreign catalogues. This catalog includes many libraries, including all of the La Sapienza Libraries as well as the Italian National Public Libraries.

In order to search the online union catalog in english, simply click on the ENGLISH button in the upper right hand corner of their catalog page.

Click on Bibliographic Search

Once you find and display a citation that want, scroll down to the Localizzazioni line near the bottom of the citation and select ALL to see which Italian libraries own the book. Those in Rome have codes beginning with RM.

URBS Online Catalog

URBS network (Unione Romana Biblioteche Scientifiche) was founded in 1992. At present it is a consortium of sixteen libraries, all located in Rome, belonging to Academies, Universities and Research institutes of the following countries: Austria, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom, United States of America, and Vatican City.

URBS represents a bibliographic source of the utmost importance in the humanities, particularly with regards to archaeology and the classical studies, history, the arts, philology, law and sociology. The online catalogue (daily updated) gives access to a bibliographic database of over three million documents.
