Locating Primary Resources

There's no foolproof recipe for locating primary sources, but one approach is to search the library's catalog (The CAT) for historical figures as Authors (e.g. Cesar Chavez, Ang Lee). Other terms to try in your CAT search; "documents", "sources", "oral history", "diaries", "personal narratives" or "letters".

United States Government and Politics

The U.S. Government issues thousands of reports on legal, social, and political issues. Most are in the Social Sciences Library, 2nd Floor, Paterno.  Some government documents appear in The CAT, others require specialized access tools.

CQ ELECTRONIC LIBRARY Sources and analysis of U.S. politics. Includes CQ Weekly Report - a news magazine with a focus on Congress that goes back to 1983 online. Earlier material in print, JK1.C15 (2nd floor Paterno) and the CQ Congress Collection -everything you could want to know about congress, includes voting patterns, bills sponsored by members, major legislative initiatives

LEXIS NEXIS CONGRESSIONAL - reports and documents produced by Congress

EXECUTIVE BRANCH DOCUMENTS can often be found in The CAT. Search by topic or agency (e.g. Immigration and Naturalization). You can also browse the Government Documents Collection in the Social Sciences Library. Government materials are organized by SuDoc numbers. A few numbers to try:

Some Presidential messages (speeches, news conferences, etc.) are online through the American Presidency Project, and the Weekly Compilation of Presidential Documents.

COURT DECISIONS and LAWS are online via Lexis Nexis Academic Universe. For analysis and context use the CQ Electronic Library Supreme Court Collection described above.

Increasing amounts of government information are on the INTERNET . See http://www.gpoaccess.gov/topics/environment.html for a list of agencies on the web.
