Consult a Biographical Dictionary to get background information to aid you in your search:

The American National Biography Online offers portraits of more than 17,000 men and women -- from all eras and walks of life -- whose lives have shaped the nation. The online version reproduces the full-text of the original 24 volume set published in 1999, with new and updated entries added regularly. Gale Virtual Reference Library (GVRL) contains searchable full-text of encyclopedias, almanacs, and specialized reference sources in many different subject fields.

Oxford Reference Online brings together over 100 dictionary, encyclopedia, language, and subject reference works published by Oxford University Press in a single cross-searchable resource.

SEARCH TIPS:  Limit search to Delaware Campus Library, enter last name, first name in Keyword Search (eg Twain, Mark) - if you are not satisfied with the results, search All Penn State and use The I WANT IT button to request a book

America History and Life - "includes about 400,000 annotated or abstracted references to American and Canadian history.  Published since 1964, the database includes over 2,000 journals worldwide, including state and local historical journals as well as historical articles from hundreds of major humanities and social science journals.  It also includes thousands of book and media reviews, citations to published books, and dissertations."
SEARCH TIPS:  Use the "book" beside Subject Terms to browse the Subject Index and paste the correct format of the name, limit search to articles by checking appropriate box - Use the Get It button to find available links to full text articles. If you need help, library staff is available to assist you.

ew York Times Historical (1851-2001) - "Includes a digitized image of every backfile issue of The New York Times from cover to cover, including news stories, editorials, photos, graphics, and advertisements. Searchers can use basic keyword, advanced, guided, and relevancy search techniques to locate information. Or, they can browse through issues page by page, as one would browse a printed edition. Search results lists provide bibliographic information, including date, issue, article headline, page number, and byline (where given). Users may choose to display the full page image of any page in any issue."
SEARCH TIPS:  Enter first name last name (eg Mark Twain), limit the date range to the year of death
