Find books: use The CAT, Penn State's online catalog at http://cat.libraries.psu.edu/

Find articles in magazines, journals, newspapers: use the Databases by Title List (A - Z) menu at http://www.lias.psu.edu:80/alalllib.html, try ProQuest or Academic Universe for broad subject coverage.

Find out if a specific magazine or journal is full text online: check the Full Text Electronic Resources list at http://apps.libraries.psu.edu/fasttrack/search.cfm

Find information on the Internet: use search engines such as Google (http://www.google.com)

Get the format for bibliographies and footnotes: sample citation formats are available at: http://www.dianahacker.com/resdoc/

Order books from another Penn State campus: when you see the description of the individual book displayed on The CAT screen, check the top of the screen for the I WANT IT button, click that and fill in the requested information. This will not work on a screen that lists several books, you must be at the screen describing an individual book. Or call library, 610.892.1386.

Order a film or video from another Penn State campus: when you see description of an individual item displayed on The CAT screen, check the top of the screen for the I WANT IT button, click that and fill in the requested information. This will not work on a screen that lists several items, you must be at the screen describing an individual item.

Some films and videos are not in University Libraries. A huge film collection is available through MediaTech. These films must be booked in advance for classroom use. These films are listed in LIAS CAT and a special film database called MediaNet. Search MediaNet at http://www.medianet.libraries.psu.edu/ There are links in both the CAT and MediaNet to do online booking. If you have problems with ordering any films, contact the library at ext. 386.

Renew books: click on the My Library Account link thru LIAS (http://www.lias.psu.edu/) and follow links to renew books; LIAS will alert you if not all your books can be renewed; or call library, 610.892.1386

Search Library Databases from home by entering your Penn State ACCESS userid and password when prompted. Look up your userid and password at a CAC Signature Station computer in Vairo Library.

Detect plagiarism: search unique language by doing a "phrase" search in Google (http://www.google.com) or one of the other search engines. For further information on detection, prevention and University policies, consult http://tlt.its.psu.edu/suggestions/cyberplag/

Get a library card: your student or faculty id is your library card.

Get an id card: at the library front desk; if you've lost one, you must pay $15 in the Financial Office (105 Main) before you can get a replacement.

Arrange for computer presentations in class: contact Information Technology Services Department (Room 128 Vairo Library) or call 610-892-1297 or e-mail laptoprequest@de.psu.edu for help in showing PowerPoint or other computer presentations in class; they will help you load it on equipment compatible with the computer projection equipment.
