Scope of this Guide:

The sports marketing and management industry is comprised of those companies engaged in commercial sports entertainment in the following ways:

sports teams, clubs, and individuals participating in live sporting events before a paying audience, and owners of such teams or clubs
companies that provide specialized services to support sports participants
companies that operate racetracks and other dedicated sports venues
sporting event organizers, promoters and managers
agents and managers who represent or manage sports figures

Companies operating in this industry encompass a wide array of team sports, individual sports, motor sports, horse racing and dog racing, with the common feature that the sporting events are commercial activities. Principal revenue streams include ticket sales; sales of broadcast rights on networks, cable and internet; corporate endorsements and sponsorships; and merchandise sales.

Combined, the "Big 4" leagues in America , the National Football League (NFL), National Basketball Association (NBA), the National Hockey League (NHL) and Major League Baseball (MLB) leagues bring in about $16.4 billion in annual revenue.
