INDUSTRY DEFINITIONS

The transportation and logistics service industry consists of a range of businesses involved in the manufacturing, warehousing, selling, transportation, and distribution of goods. This industry is vast, encompassing companies involved in the entire supply chain process, from the purchasing of raw materials to the use of decision making software to optimize revenue and profit.

The North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) is in the process of replacing the SIC System. NAICS is an improvement over the SIC system. SIC codes consisting of 4 digits will be replaced by 6 digit NAICS numbers. In addition, some 350 new industries are being separately recognized for the first time with NAICS. Consult the online version for a list of NAICS codes, tables showing correspondence between NAICS and the SIC system, and other information on how NAICS differs from the SIC System. Note that in many instances there is not a one-to-one correlation between SIC and NAICS.
