What is LIAS?
LIAS (Library Information Access System), with its online catalog, The CAT, is used to identify and locate Penn State materials. It also provides access to full-text services, Internet gateways, World Wide Web, and numerous specialized databases, including library catalogs from other institutions around the world.
What is the loan period for items at the library?
The standard period for regular loans is four weeks. Faculty, graduate students and honor students are given semester loans. All loaned materials are subject to recall.
How many items can I borrow at once?
Undergraduates can borrow 100 items at any one time. Graduate students, University Scholars/Honor students, and faculty may borrow 200 items. University staff may borrow 50 items. The general public may borrow 20 items.
How long does it take to receive books and periodical articles from other Penn State locations?
Generally, about 5-7 days. We ask that you allot as much time as possible to allow for recalls and delays.
How is the library arranged?
Penn State DuBois Campus Library, like most college and university libraries, is arranged according to the Library of Congress Classification System. This differs from the Dewey Decimal System, which is used by most high school and public libraries.
How many books and journals are in the Library?
The DuBois Campus Library houses over 50,000 books and more than 250 journals covering a wide variety of subjects. In addition to what is held at DuBois, there are over 4 million books and more than 15,000 journals available through LIAS and the Penn State Libraries.
Are there any online tutorials available?
Yes. The Virtual Library includes software tutorials for LIAS, Eudora, FirstClass, Graphics Editors, Microsoft Office, and Netscape. It also includes links to various search engines, style manuals, grammar guides, & web evaluating sites.

I tried to use the “I Want It” feature, but it didn’t work. Why is that and what should I do?
There could be a number of reasons. First, if you’ve never registered with the Library you need to come in and fill out a registration card. We especially need your access id and an email address so that you can be notified when your materials arrive in the Library. Second, this feature will not work if the status is listed as "1 Reported Missing" or "Check Shelves." Third, if an item has multiple volumes, this feature often will not work. To request an item when this feature isn't working, print out the page that lists the book's information in The CAT and bring it to the Circulation Desk. We will process your request manually.
