Information Search Strategy

Meeting Times:            

 

        Class meets for the first eight weeks of the Fall & Spring semesters on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4:30 p.m. to 5:20 p.m.

 

Prerequisite or concurrent:       

 

        English 015 and/or English 030.

 

Course Description:     

 

        Concepts and methodology for determining informational needs and planning efficient strategies to locate information in an academic library.

 

 Course Objectives:      

 

        LST 100/100H is designed to be an introduction to using the fundamental resources in the Penn State Libraries:

 

  • Library catalog

  • Periodical indexes and databases
  • Electronic resources
  • Special collections

 

       

 

 

         

       

 

 

 

        Determining one's own information needs and developing efficient strategies to locate information using the Libraries’ system and the Internet

        will be covered.

          

        Upon completion of this class, students should be able to:

 

  • Develop a basic understanding of the information environment and the value of lifelong learning.
  • Select, define and limit a research subject, topic, problem or issue.
  • Locate, identify, and retrieve appropriate library resources.
  • Critically evaluate retrieved information
  • Correctly prepare a bibliography using APA style format.
  • Develop an understanding of legal, ethical, and sociological issues surrounding information.

                                   

Other Information:

 

            Students will be doing research on a topic for one of their other courses as part of the coursework for the class.

 

            There are no required texts. Students are encouraged to have a binder for course handouts and notes. Materials will be placed on course       

            reserve in the library for students to use.

 

            Grading is based on class attendance, two resources reviews/evaluations, and a final bibliography project.

 

            Students in the Campus Honors or University Scholars programs are encouraged to take this class for honors credit.
