Program at Penn State

Early Childhood Education
Early Childhood Education is an option area in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction. There are two master's programs: Master of Science (M.S.) and Master of Education (M.Ed). The Master of Science program focuses on research while the Master of Education program is aimed at providing increased professional competence in education. Graduates from the master's programs have held a variety of positions ranging from teachers and administrators in public schools to positions at the state level. There are also two doctoral level programs offered: Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) and Doctor of Education (D.Ed.). The Doctor of Philosophy is conferred to acknowledge high achievement and scholarship in the field of education. The Doctor of Education provides greater preparedness for working in the education profession. Graduates from the doctoral programs have gone on to work as university professors and as consultants and directors for early childhood and other family-related agencies at the state and federal level.

National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC)

What Works Clearinghouse
Created in 2002, the goal of the What Works Clearinghouse (WWC) is to identify findings of scientific evidence. The WWC collects, screens, and identifies studies of the effectiveness of educational interventions (programs, products, practices, and policies); reviews studies that have the strongest design; and reports on the strengths and weaknesses of those studies against the WWC Evidence Standards. Study reports [ratings of individual studies and designs for reliability]; intervention reports [findings that meet WWC Evidence Standards for a particular intervention]; topic reports [description of topic and each intervention that the WWC reviewed]
