Program at Penn State

Language and Literacy Education
This program places emphasis on work that is interdisciplinary, theoretically rigorous, self-reflective, and contextual in the broad fields of language, culture, and pedagogy. Faculty and students pursue issues related to culture and power, teacher education, the social and historical construction of literacies, and politics of (first, second and bilingual) language use, curriculum, and policy. Research and courses are often guided by commitments to critical inquiry and educationally and socially transformative practices. Graduate work is organized around students' professional interests.
