Program at Penn State

Social Studies Education
Social Studies Education is an option area in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction. There are two master's programs. While one leads to the Master of Science (M.S.), the other leads to the Master of Education (M.Ed). Both programs have a strong emphasis on social studies education research and practice and are designed for the practicing teacher. Graduates from the two master's programs often occupy positions such as lead social studies teachers, social studies department heads, and social studies curriculum coordinators. Two programs are offered at the doctoral level. They both have strong emphasis on social studies education research. The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) program prepares its graduates for careers in social studies education research at large universities and colleges. The Doctor if Education (D.Ed.) prepares its graduates for careers in smaller colleges, school districts, and other educational agencies.
