Find Laptop Connection Information...

To use the Public Open Port Internet connections throughout the libraries (details on back) you will need:

These instructions cover Windows 2000 & XP, Windows ME & 98, Windows 95, and Mac OS operating systems. Port locations are also listed below.

Windows 2000 and XP
1. Close or minimize any open windows.
2. On the desktop, right-click on "My Network Places".
3. Choose "Properties" from the pop-up menu.
4. Right-click on "Local Area Connection."
5. Choose "Properties" from the pop-up menu.
6. Double-click the "Internet protocol (TCP/IP)" list item.
7. Select "Obtain an IP address automatically."
8. Select "Obtain DNS server address automatically."
9. Click OK. Click OK. Click "Close".
10. Open Internet Explorer or Netscape. Go to https://connect.libraries.psu.edu . Be sure to type "https" (not "http") as this is a secure site.
11. At the login screen, login with your Access ID and password.
12. To Logout: you will need to go to http://connect.libraries.psu.edu ("http" this time, not "https").

Windows ME and Windows 98

1. Close or minimize any open windows.
2. On the desktop, right-click on Network Neighborhood.
3. Select "Properties" from the pop-up menu.
4. Choose the Configuration tab. Look for TCP/IP in the scrolling list and select it with a single click (if there is more than one occurrence of "TCP/IP" select the one that says "network adapter").
5. With TCP/IP selected, click on the Properties button.
6. In the TCP/IP dialog box, go to the tab that reads, "IP Address." Choose, "Obtain an IP address automatically."
7. Click the WINS tab (WINS Configuration in 98) at the top of the dialog box. At the bottom of the dialog box, make sure that "Use DHCP for WINS resolution." is checked. Click OK. Then, click OK again to close the Network Neighborhood dialog box.
8. A box should appear asking you if you want to restart your computer…choose "Yes" (If this box does not come up restart your computer manually).9. Open Internet Explorer or Netscape. Go to https://connect.libraries.psu.edu. Be sure to type "https" (not "http") as this is a secure site.
10. At the login screen, login with your Access ID and password.
11. To Logout: you will need to go to http://connect.libraries.psu.edu ("http" this time, not "https").

Windows 95
1. On the Desktop, double-click on "My Computer," then "Control panel." In the Control Panel, double-click on "Network."
2. On the Configuration tab, look for "TCP/IP" in the scrolling list of network components and double-click it (if there is more than one item labeled "TCP/IP" select the one that says "Ethernet Interface").
3. Select the "IP Address" tab. Choose, "Obtain an "IP address automatically". Click "OK" twice to close the dialog boxes.
4. Windows 95 will ask if you'd like to restart your computer. Click "Yes" to restart your computer.
5. Open Internet Explorer or Netscape. Go to https://connect.libraries.psu.edu. Be sure to type "https" (not "http") as this is a secure site.
6. At the login screen, login with your Access ID and password.
7. To Logout: you will need to go to http://connect.libraries.psu.edu ("http" this time, not "https").

MacOS
1. From the Apple menu, select "Control panels."
2. Select TCP/IP.
3. Select Configurations.
4. In the "Configure" pull down menu, select Using DHCP Server.
5. Save and close the window.
6. Open either Internet Explorer or Netscape and go to https://connect.libraries.psu.edu (be sure to include the s after http, it is a secure site.)
7. At the login screen, login and you're ready to go.
8. To Logout: you will need to enter the address http://connect.libraries.psu.edu (do not add the s at the end of http as directed in the "logging in" instructions.)
