This page contains suggestions for doing library research after graduation. Included are free sources and suggestions for accessing research databases.
Some free resources you can use to keep current in your field:
Scirus - This search engine/web site offers indexes scientific information, some of which is free.
Ingenta – This database provides free access to tables of contents of over 20,000 journals. Access to the full-text of these articles is provided for a fee.
Public Library of Science
Scitopia - federated search
engine for mostly engineering, some science, scholarly societies.
WorldCat Unified catalog of the holdings of libaries around the world.
COPAC Unified catalog of the holdings of UK libaries.
PA Power Library – This set of databases, funded via state library funds, is accessible to anyone with a current Pennsylvania public library card. Included are fulltext newspapers, business journals, and some reference works.
FindArticles - This resource provides access to some free articles from around 900 magazines from 1998 to date.
Small Town Papers - This site provides free access to the fulltext of newspapers from small towns in North America from the late 1800s to date.
ASEE conference proceedings search - Search for papers from the American Society for Engineering Education conferences from 1996 to date.
SciELO - free site for sci-tech journals from South American and other Spanish and Portuguese language countries.
Open J-Gate - a free gateway to open access journals and tables-of-contents. Searchable across all content.
Government databases such as NTIS are available for free searching but won’t give you the full text. However, if you visit the individual government agency websites, you will find a lot of full text freely available. For example, try:
- DOE Information Bridge
- NASA Technical Reports Server
Science.gov - a search engine for U.S. federal government sci-tech resources.
Tech Xtra - free search tool for engineering, math and computing.
STINET - database of unclassified defense research documents. Some full text available. 1974+.
Another option is to search the Web using Google or a government search engine such as FirstGov.
