GETTING HELP

LOCATIONS AND MAPS

The University Libraries comprise 36 libraries at 24 locations throughout the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. On this campus, we have fourteen libraries. Most of those libraries are located in the Paterno side of the main library. Here is a link to Locations and Hours.

USING THE CAT

Quick Guide to the CAT. The CAT contains information on books, encyclopedias, dictionaries, government documents, videos, music and more. It does NOT contain individual articles from journals and magazines or newspapers.

  • Understanding call numbers and Using the Library of Congress call number system

  • Click on the I WANT IT button in the CAT to have things delivered for pickup.

  • My Library Account Use this link from within the CAT to renew books, view what items you have checked out and see if you owe any fines.

  • Annex, The annex is a storage location. If something you need is in the annex, use the I WANT IT button to request it for pickup.

  • Interlibrary Loan, If Penn State libraries do not own something, we can still get it for you for free. Use the Illiad system to request items. Turn around time for these requests is between 2-3 weeks (but 80% of requests are here within 1 - 7 working days!). You can also use the EZ Borrow system. E-ZBorrow allows you to request books from the catalogs of more than 40 academic libraries throughout Pennsylvania as well as New Jersey and West Virginia. The borrowing period is four weeks with one renewal.

    FINDING ARTICLES

  • Faculty expectations: Scholarly versus popular material

  • Google versus Library Databases

    GOOGLE LIBRARY DATABASES
Easy to use Easy to use
Often too many results Fewer results, more on target
Mostly free w/links to paid content Free to Penn Staters
Mishmash of good quality and junk Mostly high quality
Not much scholary material Mix of popular and scholarly
Very few scholarly full-text articles Mostly full-text

  • See tips for evaluating information sources for help determining quality of resources, web resources in particular.

    Try these databases first:

  • Proquest for scholarly and popular articles on most any topic.
  • GeoRef for articles on geosciences topics
  • Meteorological & Geoastrophysical Abstracts for meteorology
  • Compendex or Metadex for materials sciences topics.

    CITATION

  • Cite your references

  • Deciphering citations - is it a book or a journal article? Why does it matter?

    Example:

Dating metamorphic reactions and fluid flow; application to exhumation of high-P granulites in a crustal-scale shear zone, western Canadian Shield
    Mahan, K H; Goncalves, P; Williams, M L; Jercinovic, M J
    Journal of Metamorphic Geology, vol.24, no.3, pp.193-217, Apr 2006

  • What part of a citation to search for in the CAT (or try Citation Linker)

  • Information Literacy and You - a tutorial covering all aspects of the research process.
