The Engineering Library supports the courses taught in the College of Engineering and the research needs of the faculty, staff and students at Penn State. There are a number of specialized collections, some of which are described below

Standards

Standards are an important information resource in engineering. They represent regulatory standards, voluntary standards, test methodologies and standardized procedures to measure and evaluate products, systems and materials. The major indexes to standards are Index and Directory of Industry Standards in the reference area of the Engineering Library and the Electronic Reference Page Annual Book of ASTM Standards , available from the Libraries' Home Page on the Database by Title (A-Z) List. You may search by subject or by sponsoring organization and standard number. The Engineering Library has a complete set of the following standards:

  • ANS (American Nuclear Society)
  • IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) See the IEEE Explore on the E-Resource List for full text access. The Engineering Library also has a number of these standards in paper copy. Check the CAT for holdings and call numbers.
  • ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials)

The Engineering Library has selected standards from a variety of societies. These include:

  • AASHTO (American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials)
  • ANSI (American National Standards Institute)
  • IPC (Institute for Interconnecting and Packaging Electronic Circuits)
  • NFPA (National Fire Protection Agency)
  • SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers)

Technical Reports

Technical reports are a valuable resource for timely, detailed information on a variety of engineering subjects. Many reports are available in print. Check LIAS under author or title for those owned by the Libraries. However, the vast majority of these reports are available in microfiche. The Engineering Library has over 500,000 microfiche reports. Indexing to these reports in provided by NTIS, an index on the E-Resource List. Technical reports on microfiche are located using the NTIS accession number. These usually look similar to N93123456 or PB92987654. These are filed first by letter and then numerically. Ask for assistance if you have trouble locating the fiche. If the library does not own the fiche, bring complete information (accession number, title, author, date and where you found this information) to the circulation desk and request a NTIS Reports  Request from. If the request is appropriate, the library will order the fiche and notify you when it arrives. This usually takes ten business days. A list of Web sites that provide indexing and, in some cases, full text reports is available on the Engineering Library's Electronic Reference Page.
