How to Search COMPENDEX

whatCompendexWeb provides references to articles published in journals and papers published in conference proceedings since 1884. It covers all areas of engineering. It is the Web version of the print Engineering Index.

whyCompendex is the major, all discipline engineering database.  Combined with a search in NTIS, the reports database, and any discipline-specific  database provides good coverage of the literature in engineering.

whereCompendex Web is located on the E-Resource List.  It can be searched at all University computers and by registered faculty, staff and students who access the database through a University IP address.  For more information see the LIAS Remote Guide.

howSearching Summary

There are three search options in Compendex. Use Quick Search (recommended) for a guided search using keywords or to use the index term feature (thesaurus terms, list of authors, etc.)  Use Expert Search for detailed searches and to use field codes for 'power' searching. Easy search is for fast, simple keyword searches.

Quick Search

To search for :

Any words from the titles, abstracts or subject terms  - type words in input box

ex. air conditioning

Any combination of words - type words in input boxes

ex. flow

AND (operators are AND, OR, NOT - located in pull down menu)

particle*  (note the truncation symbol is *)

You may designate which field a word or phrase should be searched.  Options include all fields, author, title, serial, etc.)

When you have completed the search terms, click on search.  Compendex will list the articles and papers with the appropriate terms.

You may also use the 'Add Ei Index Terms' to refine your search.  Click on the appropriate choice (authors, subjects, etc.), and follow the directions in the box. When you have selected the appropriate terms click on search page.  BE SURE THAT THE OPERATOR BOX IS CORRECT.  The default is AND.  You may actually want the search to be an OR search.  For example, if you have marked the author index terms of Pietrucha, M. T. and Pietrucha, Martin T. you want the operator to be OR since you are interested in articles written by Dr. Pietrucha in whatever form his name appears.

Expert Search

Enter search terms in box using correct operators.  Indicate appropriate search code.

Ex. pietrucha wn au and signs in all

(searching for articles or papers written by pietrucha with the word signs in the title, abstract or subject headings)

Click on search.

Another way to "fine tune" your search is to use the refine options on the right side of the results page.

REMEMBER:

If a search returns 0 results or a short list, consider using the subject, title or author thesauri.  Be sure your operator choice is correct.  Consider using synonyms.

Some citations in Compendex do not have abstracts.

Many of the results are available in full text. Click on the full text button or use "Get It" from the detailed display.

For more information see 'Help and FAQs' on the Compendex search page.

NOTE: you can also limit your searches by year, language and document type.
