ASME
whoThe  Society of Mechanical Engineers, ASME, was founded in 1880.  Now with over 125,000 members worldwide, its focus of interest  is the wide range of disciplines that comprise mechanical engineering.

whatBooks - ASME publishes a number of books on the various areas of mechanical engineering. It also publishes topical series from its divisions, such as the PVP series (pressure vessel and piping) and the FED series (Fluid Engineering Division).

Conferences -   ASME sponsors or co-sponsors numerous conferences each year.  These papers can be published in several types of publications.  Many are published in a collected volume of papers from the conference and listed under the name of the conference.  Others are published in either the Winter Annual Meeting (TJ1.A713) or the ASME Technical Papers (TJ1.A7133).

Journals - Mechanical Engineering (TJ1.A72) is the monthly magazine of the society. In addition, ASME publishes several subject specific journals and the Transactions series.  Originally one title, the Transactions has split into 19 subject specific 'Transactions' journals.  Each has its own name and call number, for example, Journal of Heat Transfer (TJ1.A7 (Ser. C)) or Journal of Applied Mechanics (TJ1.A7 (Ser. E)).

Standards - ASME is responsible for over 600 standards and codes pertaining to mechanical engineering.  These include the Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code , elevator code, pump code, etc.

whyASME is one of the largest publishers in engineering. Their scope is international, the breadth of their coverage broad.  They are  responsible for many of the standards in the field . Publications are timely and well reviewed.

whereThe CAT - provides access to entire items.  Search by conference title or editor, book title, author or editor, standard title, or journal title.

Compendex - Coverage includes journal articles and conference papers.  Search by author, title words of the journal article or conference paper, keywords, or  subject terms.

howConference papers may  be found in a number of locations.  Some are published in collected volumes, or 'books' and located by the title of the conference.  The ASME/AIAA National Heat Transfer Conference (TJ1.N38) is an example. Others are  collected in the the Winter Annual Meeting and Technical Papers series.  These all have a code which identifies the paper and allows you to locate it in the bound volumes.  For example 96-WA/HT-5 identifies the fifth paper  in the 1996 Winter Annual Meeting volume on heat transfer. In 'long hand' it would read 1996 Winter Annual Meeting, Heat Transfer Division, Paper 5. The Technical Meeting papers are designated with a date, initials and paper number: 93-GT-200.

Sometimes a bibliography will list a technical paper without the paper number.  The citation will usually include the author, title of the paper, date and ASME.  Check Compendex to find the paper number.

If the University Libraries does not own the item you need, use either Interlibrary Loan or Document Delivery.
