Document Delivery
whoAny  faculty, staff or student of The Pennsylvania State University may request an item through the document delivery service.

whatJournal articles, conference papers, reports, standards and other items are available through document delivery.  Generally an entire book is requested through interlibrary loan.

whyMost requests are made for items that the University Libraries does not purchase.  This includes articles from journals that the Libraries has never had a subscription, titles that have been canceled or that were started late in the publication cycle and there are missing issues.  In some cases, lost items will be ordered through document delivery, or, papers or standards that are late in arriving in the Libraries and are needed for a deadline.

whereDocument delivery requests  can be made from almost any resource that provides citations.  This includes bibliographies in articles and papers, databases, Web references, indexes, etc.  Please try to have as complete a citation as possible.

The Library uses several document suppliers.  These include:

  • Global - for  standards.  Standards are ordered at the discretion of the librarian.  Normally, they will  be in the library  within a week of placing the order.
  • CISTI - for journal articles, etc.  Routinely, the ordering policy is
    • any article from a journal that has been canceled,
    • from a journal that was subscribed to after the first volume
    • if there is a time constraint and the article is needed fast.  They are normally received in less than one week.
  • Linda Hall Library - for conference papers.  Normally takes one week.
  • SAE - for SAE publications that are not part of our regular collection. Normally takes one week.
  • NTIS - technical reports maintained by NTIS.   Normally takes 2-3 weeks Also, remember to check the Web since many reports are now available full text online..
howFor items not at Penn State go to the Materials Not at Penn State page and follow the directions there. Requests can be made at the Engineering Library Circulation Desk for NTIS technical reports not in our reports collection or on the web, and for standards from any organizations that are not held at Penn State. Ask for a request form at the desk. When completed, turn in at desk.  You will be notified by email when it arrives.
