TRIS
whoTRIS, Transportation Research Information Services, is a database produced and maintained by the Transportation Research Board (TRB) and made available through the National Transportation Library (NTL). TRIS is available on the LIAS E-Resources List.

whatTRIS indexes transportation research from books, conferences, journals, technical reports and other resources.

Note - TRIS Online differs somewhat from TRIS provided through a fee-based vendor.  TRIS Online does not include records from the ITRD (International Transportation Research Documentation system, formerly IRRD).

whyTRIS is the largest transportation bibliographic database in the world.  It has over 400,000 records and covers all modes and subjects in transportation.  It has links to some materials in full text.

whereTransportation materials can be somewhat tricky to locate. Some records are located exactly as they appear in the TRIS Online database and may be located in The CAT by author, editor or title.  However, others will be located in the NTIS fiche collection by the NTIS ID number.

These options might look confusing.  If you have questions, do not hesitate to ask!

howOnce you have a record fromTRIS, there are several things you  will need to consider. Remember, more full text titles are being placed on the web so look for links to these.

If you are looking for:

  • a journal article without a full text link - check The CAT for the title of the journal.  If the library holds the journal and the appropriate year, note the call  number and location, and retrieve the article.  If not, use Interlibrary Loan.
  • A report without a full text link- check The CAT for the title or author of the report.  If it not in The CAT, check NTIS for an NTIS ID number.  If not located, use Interlibrary Loan. For more information see Technical Reports Helpsheet
  • Conference paper without a full text link - check in The CAT under the name of the conference, not the name of the paper.  Many of the conferences indexed in TRIS are from the Transportation Research Board's annual meeting and published in the Transportation Reseach Record (TRR, call number TE1.H54)  These are shelved by  the volume number.  Engineering has all the TRRs.  For more information see Conferences Helpsheet. See Interlibrary Loan for titles we do not own.
  • a book - check The CAT under the title of the book, or the name of the editor or author.
If the University Libraries does not own the item you need, use either Interlibrary Loan or Document Delivery.
