The Special Collections department, located on the first floor of Paterno Library, encompasses three different collections: Rare Books and Manuscripts, Historical Collections and Labor Archives, and the Penn State University Archives. These units contain some of the most distinguished research collections of the University Libraries, and they attract scholars from around the globe. Due to the nature of the material, the Special Collections Library has some special rules for use. Special Collections is a closed collection, meaning that staff will bring the items you request from the storage area to you. Our Special Collections storage area has strict climate and security controls, and features special accordion-style moving shelving units. The staff may ask you to wear gloves if you are handling photographs or other delicate items, and it is requested that you use only pencil into the reading area. There are lockers in a room adjacent to the Exhibit Hall for the storage of all other belongings you may have with you. Read more! |
