What is a Scholarly/Peer-reviewed/Refereed Article?

A peer reviewed journal indicates that before being accepted for publication, articles are reviewed by other experts in the field; also known as scholarly or refereed journals.

Databases

Databases can be accessed through the E-Resource List (A-Z) and are only available to current Penn State students, faculty and staff.

IEEE Xplore

IEEE Xplore contains the full text of all IEEE and IEE journal articles, conference papers, and standards published since 1988. The material can be accessed through a searchable database or by browsing.

ACM digital library (computer science)

The Association for Computing Machinery's (ACM) Digital Library includes the full text of all its current (19) journals magazines, (5) co-distributed journals, and (44) conference proceedings. It features searching capabilities and printing.
Coverage: 1991 onwards

Applied Science and Technology Abstracts

This abstract covers over 350 key, international English-language periodicals in the applied sciences and technology.  It is a good source of information on management, careers and employment, and financial trends in the scientific and technological fields.  It abstracts interviews, meetings, conferences, exhibitions, discussions, new product reviews, and conference proceedings; it also cites book reviews.

Compendex (engineering)

Indexes journal articles, conference proceedings and selected technical reports in all areas of engineering.

ABI/INFORM

A business-oriented article database for subjects such as advertising, marketing, company information, industry trends, human resources, economic policy, health care, consumer products and services.

TIP: How do I find appropriate subject terms?

• Type in keywords words related to your topic.
• Look for books that seem relevant, click on DETAILS , click on the MORE tab and look at the subject terms.
• Search again using these new terms in the "Topic: Title + Subject" search category.

Once you find a book you want, you can order the item through the Penn State Interlibrary Loan Department.

WorldCat - WorldCat includes over 38 million records for books, periodicals, magazines, and any other type of material cataloged by OCLC member libraries.  The database includes records for material as early as the 11th century.

Electronic Books

netLibrary

NetLibrary provides access to a PALCI-shared collection of electronic books. Access to a title is limited to one concurrent user at a time.

Safari

Safari provides electronic access to computer manuals from a several publishers and allows the user to search across a number of different manuals simultaneously.

MIT CogNet

MIT CogNet, the Cognitive and Brain Sciences Community Online, provides access to a searchable, full-text library of books, journals, and reference works from the MIT Press.

World Bank e-Library

World Bank E-Library presents full text PDF-format versions of all new World Bank books and selected books beginning in 1984.

Gutenberg-e

The e-books are selected by the American Historical Association and produced by the electronic publishing staff at Columbia University Press. The electronic versions offer elements that cannot be conveyed in print: extensive documentation, hyperlinks to supplementary literature, images, music, video, and links to related web sites.

The Pennsylvania State University's electronic Theses and Dissertations Archives

This archive is the collection of all Penn State electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs). These ETDs fall into three categories of access. Most are available for worldwide access. Others are restricted to the Penn State community. Some are totally restricted due to a number of reasons, such as pre-publication concerns.

Dissertation Abstracts is the primary source for 1.4 million doctoral dissertations (and selected master's theses) from over 1000 North American and European universities.
