December Hot Topic:

Break Room Etiquette

This month's Hot Topic is a friendly reminder of break room etiquette. Below are some basic rules that should be followed when utilizing the break room area(s):

  • Please be considerate of others by properly cleaning up messes before leaving the break area.
    • If your lunch splatters in the microwave, wipe it out.
    • Trash should be disposed of in proper trash cans
  •

  • If the sink is clogged or an appliance appears to not be working properly, please report it; do not leave it for the next person to find

  • Try to prevent the microwaving of foods with strong odors
    • This could be a potential distraction to other employees

  • Consider the appropriateness of conversations to be held in the break room setting.
    • Some topics are better left for another time and place

  • Be respectful of others' time
    • Do not jump in line to use the microwave - Others' time is just as valuable as yours
    • Do not leave your cooked meal in the microwave and forget about it.

  • At the end of the week check to make sure you haven't left anything in the refrigerator – no one wants to deal with someone else's moldy forgotten lunch.

  • Be courteous of the refrigerator space.
    • If a lot of people use the refrigerator, try to use a cooler or lunch bag that takes up a minimal amount of space.

  • Label food that you leave in the refrigerator
    • Prevents food from being taken by mistake
    • Unless it is marked “Help Yourself,” do not consume food or beverage that does not belong to you.

These few basic principles of proper break room etiquette should provide you and your co-workers with a more pleasurable break period during your hectic day of work. The main thing to remember, when discussing break room etiquette, is having respect and consideration for others as an effort to receive that same respect and consideration in return.
