What is a Thesis Statement?
A thesis statement
  • Illustrates a controversy;
  • Highlights the main points of both views
  • Takes a position for one side; and
  • States an argument / position which you will defend
Examples
  • "Colleges should sever relationships with corporations that exploit laborers in third world countries."
  • "The federal government should increase funding for experimental AIDS treatment protocols."
