Obtaining journal articles online

The library's electronic databases, accessible through the E-Resource List and the Find Articles by Subject page, provide access to journal articles and abstracts (summaries) online. Access to these databases is free to Penn State students and faculty.

In many cases, your search in a database will retrieve the entire article in HTML (text only) and/or PDF (portable document format). In some cases, instead of full text you may see only the citation (information about the article, such as author, title, and publication date) and an abstract (summary) of an article. Click the“Get it” button, which will usually take you to another database that has the full text of the article.

Sometimes, the full text of an article is not available through the library's electronic databases. In that case, check The CAT to see if the Library owns the print version of the publication by searching for the publication name under Journal Title. If the Library has the journal, you can locate the issue you need in the stacks.

For more help with finding full text articles online, see the Using Periodicals and Journals section of this tutorial.
