Types of Information on the Web: Some Common Examples
Type   Description   Example
Company Information   Many companies have their own web site where you can find information about their organization (from their perspective of course). The .com in their web address tell us that they are a commercial enterprise.
  • Barnes and Noble (www.bn.com)
  • Pepsi (www.pepsiworld.com)
Educational Institutional Information   Most educational institutions have their own web site where you can find information about their organization. Educational institutions have .edu in their web address.
  • The Pennsylvania State University (www.psu.edu)
Entertainment and Leisure Information   These are sites that provide information on popular culture, sports, and travel. If a commercial enterprise is providing the information, you’ll probably see .com in their web address; however, if a not-for-profit organization is providing the information, you’ll see .org in their web address.
  • Centre County Convention and Visitors Bureau (www.visitpennstate.org)
  • Visit PA (www.visitpa.com)
Government and Military Information   Government agencies and military bodies have put a lot of their public information on the web. A governmental body will have .gov in its web address while a military body will have .mil in its web address.
  • Library of Congress (www.loc.gov)
  • The Pentagon (www.defenselink.mil/pubs/pentagon)
  • Senate of Pennsylvania (www.pasen.gov)
News   Many news sources, such as newspapers and magazines, can be found on the web. Since most news sources are commercial enterprises, .com will be in their web address.
  • CNN (www.cnn.com)
  • Washington Post (www.washingtonpost.com)
Professional/Trade Information   Many professional and trade organizations and associations have a web site for members to access and share information. Since they usually are not-for-profit organizations, .org is often found in their web address.
  • American Marketing Association (www.ama.org)
  • Pennsylvania Association of Convention and Visitors Bureaus (www.pacvb.org)
Personal Information   Because anyone can publish on the web, there are many personal web pages where individuals publish information about themselves and their interests. Depending upon who provides them space on a computer server, personal web pages may have .edu, .org, .com, or .net.
