RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODOLOGIES

Choosing a research design

Your ultimate choice of research methodology will be made in consultation with your thesis advisor, but you should be aware in advance of the options that are possible.

  1. Using the literature to select a research design
During your literature review, note the detailed description of methodologies and instruments used in previous research. In addition to handbooks and reviews of research, these detailed descriptions are the best way for novice researchers to determine possible approaches appropriate to their needs, such as sampling techniques, interviewing, data collection methods, and interventions. These methodologies are most easily identified in databases that include searchable fields for methodology and research design, and with search interfaces that support searching of the full text of articles.

  2. Use the CAT to become more familiar with research methods common in your discipline
Do a keyword subject search using: <<your term>> and research methodology.

  3. Examine web sites that contain many useful links to research design and specific types of research.
