ABOUT CITATION INDEXES

WEB OF SCIENCE DATABASES--CITED REFERENCE SEARCHING

How are citation indexes different?

Citation indexes are searchable by the bibliographies/bibliographic references in articles, in addition to the standard search options.  This is called Cited Reference Searching.

Why is it important?

Cited Reference Searching is useful when you want to determine what newer works have cited an older work in their bibliographies.  If you know that Smith's 1991 work is seminal in the field, you are likely interested in who else has cited that 1991 work in more recent articles.

In contrast to the more typical retrospective search, cited reference searching lets you monitor the growth or acceptance of a research premise, and update your research to identify more recent works that have cited an earlier known work.  Think of cited reference searching as letting you search forward in time, rather than the typical retrospective search.

See http://www.isinet.com/training/tutorials/citedreference for an illustration of how it works.

Can I identify research at an institution?

Yes.  When selecting graduate schools or other academic opportunities, it can be important to become familiar the work
conducted by the faculty in a particular university or academic department.  Use the 'easy search / place search' option.
            Be sure to
use the correct name!!! "Penn State" retrieved hundreds of citations, but neither "Penn State University" nor
"Pennsylvania State University" result in any hits.
