Scholarly Communication: Resources for Graduate Students

Professional Organizations

Many national societies, associations, and institutes offer special membership rates for graduate students. This often includes a subscription to the journal, newsletter, or magazine published by those organizations. In addition, many associations also offer scholarship opportunities and reduced registration fees for conferences to student members. Membership in professional societies, particularly at the national and state/regional level, will greatly enhance the professional development of graduate students and increase the chances of making valuable contacts that may help in the job hunt after graduation.

Consult faculty or other professionals within your subject field to identify important professional organizations. The links below provide starting points for your search.

Associations Unlimited.

In most cases, AU gives the address, contact information, and a description of the organization. The database can be searched by organization name, location, or key word. Associations Unlimited is a great place to search for information on organizations related to any topic, whether professional or avocational.
