Laptop Ports: TCP/IP Configuration

Select instructions for your system:

Windows 95

  1. From the Desktop Function under the Start Button, you’ll need to click on "My Computer," then "Control panel," then once in the control panel click on "Network."
  2. Once in the "Network" section, you will need to go to "Configuration." Once there you will need to double click on "TCP/IP" option.
  3. Then you will need to select the "IP Address" tab. Then you will need to select the "IP address automatically" button. Click OK twice.
  4. Restart your computer.
  5. Now that your computer has rebooted, open either Internet Explorer or Netscape and go to https://clc.its.psu.edu/PortLogin.aspx (be sure to include the s after http — it is a secure site.
  6. At the login screen, login and you’re ready to go.
  7. To Logout: you will need to enter the address http://clc.its.psu.edu/PortLogin.aspx (do not add the s at the end of http as directed in the "logging in" instructions).

Windows 98

  1. From the desktop, right click on Network Neighborhood.
  2. Scroll down the shortcut menu and click on the Properties (this will bring up the Network neighborhood dialog box).
  3. Go to the Configuration Tab (make sure it is chosen)
  4. Under this tab, you will see a window labeled "network components." Here you will need to look for TCP/IP. Once you have found it, you may notice more than one occurrence. Choose the one that has your network card listed after it.
  5. Now that you have located your TCP/IP component, highlight it and click on the Properties button.
  6. In the TCP/IP dialog box, go to the tab that reads, "IP Address." Here you will have three choices. Choose the one that says, "Obtain an IP address automatically."
  7. Now you will need to choose the WINS tab at the top of the dialog box. Under the WINS tab there is a choice at the bottom of the dialog box, "Use DHCP for WINS resolution." Make sure that is checked and click OK. Also, click OK for the Network Neighborhood dialog box.
  8. An automatic dialog box should appear at this point asking you if you want to restart your computer. Choose yes. If this box does not come up, restart your computer manually.
  9. Now that your computer has rebooted, open either Internet Explorer or Netscape and go to https://clc.its.psu.edu/PortLogin.aspx (be sure to include the s after http — it is a secure site.
  10. At the login screen, login and you’re ready to go.
  11. To Logout: you will need to enter the address http://clc.its.psu.edu/PortLogin.aspx (do not add the s at the end of http as directed in the "logging in" instructions).

Windows ME

  1. Go to Start, Settings, Control Panel.
  2. Double click on Network icon (this opens the network dialog box).
  3. Select the Configuration tab.
  4. Click the Add button. This will bring up a new dialog box.
  5. Highlight Protocol and click the Add button.
  6. A dialog box opens in the left window and "Network Protocols" in the right window:
  7. Under the "Manufacturers" window, highlight Microsoft.
  8. Under the Network Protocols window, highlight TCP/IP, Click OK.
  9. Now you will see a new network component under the network dialog box and configuration tab called TCP/IP.
  10. Double click on the "new" TCP/IP network component (a dialog box will open).
  11. In the open dialog box called TCP/IP properties, click on the IP address tab.
  12. Choose "Obtain an IP address automatically." Also, make sure there is a checkmark in the box to "detect connection to network media."
  13. Next, click on the WINS configuration tab and at the bottom of the dialog box choose DHCP for WINS Resolution.
  14. Click OK and then click OK for the Network Dialog box.
  15. A box will open asking if you want to restart your computer. Choose yes. Once your computer has restarted, open either Internet Explorer or Netscape and go to https://clc.its.psu.edu/PortLogin.aspx (be sure to include the s after http —it is a secure site).
  16. At the login screen, login and you’re ready to go.
  17. To Logout: you will need to enter the address http://clc.its.psu.edu/PortLogin.aspx (do not add the s at the end of http as directed in the "logging in" instructions).

Windows XP

  1. Minimize or close any open windows.
  2. On the desktop, right click on "My Network Places"
  3. Choose "Properties."
  4. Double-click "Local Area Connection."
  5. Click the "Properties" button.
  6. Double-click the "Internet protocol (TCP/IP) list item.
  7. Select "Obtain an IP address automatically."
  8. Click OK. Click OK. Click "Close"
  9. Open either Internet Explorer or Netscape and go to https://clc.its.psu.edu/PortLogin.aspx (be sure to include the s after http — it is a secure site.
  10. At the login screen, login and you’re ready to go.
  11. To Logout: you will need to enter the address http://clc.its.psu.edu/PortLogin.aspx (do not add the s at the end of http as directed in the "logging in" instructions).

MacOS 8–9

  1. From the Apple menu, select "Control panels."
  2. Select TCP/IP.
  3. Select Configurations.
  4. In the "Configure" pull-down menu, select Using DHCP Server.
  5. Save and close the window.
  6. Open either Internet Explorer or Netscape and go to https://clc.its.psu.edu/PortLogin.aspx (be sure to include the s after http — it is a secure site.
  7. At the login screen, login and you’re ready to go.

MacOS X

(Note: Mac OS X has a "Location" feature that allows the user to store different internet configurations simultaneously. To avoid overwriting current network settings, create a New Location for this configuration.)

  1. From the Apple menu, select Location and choose "Network Preferences..." from the popout menu
  2. If desired, select New Location... from the "Location:" pull-down menu. Follow instructions to create a new Location for the Libraries open ports.
  3. Select Built-In Ethernet from the "Show:" pull-down menu.
  4. Select the TCP/IP tab.
  5. In the "Configure" pull-down menu, select Using DHCP. (Some OSX versions may label the pull-down "Configure IPv4"—follow same instructions.)
  6. Click Apply Now and close the window. If you have created a new Location, it will now show in the Apple menu under "Locations."
  7. Open Internet Explorer, Netscape or Safari and go to https://clc.its.psu.edu/PortLogin.aspx (be sure to include the s after http — it is a secure site).
  8. At the login screen, login and you’re ready to go.
  9. To Logout: you will need to enter the address http://clc.its.psu.edu/PortLogin.aspx (do not add the s at the end of http as directed in the “logging in” instructions).
