Books: Resources total over 250,000 volumes and can be found by searching The CAT. New books are displayed for one week and may circulate. Charge out all circulating materials at the main lending services desk (Central Pattee, 1st floor). Subject area breakdown of books and journals classified according to the Library of Congress system:

Reference Books: Non-circulating materials such as dictionaries, handbooks, directories, and bibliographies are shelved in the Life Sciences reference area, arranged by call number. A few reference tools are now available online.
Indexes: Article indexes in the life sciences are available online.
Journals: The University Libraries subscribes to over 10,000 journals and serials. To determine if Penn State owns a journal, and where it is located, search the FULL journal title using the "browse titles & more" tab in The CAT. Many journals are now available online. Search Citation Linker to see what is available. Print holdings in the Life Sciences include current subscriptions to about 1,100 journals. Journals do not circulate. Unbound issues are shelved in our Current Journals area by title. Bound holdings are shelved by their call number in the stacks intershelved with the books. Check these lists for shortcuts to finding the call number of a journal. It does not include all title changes, older (ceased or cancelled) titles, or titles held at other Penn State Libraries.

For journals that we do not own, request the article through the Interlibrary Loan service.
Mushrooms: The Kneebone Mushroom Collection is a special reference collection of books and journals on mycology, mushrooms and other edible fungi. Access to this collection is by special permission only.
Fly Fishing: The Life Sciences Library recently established the George Harvey Fly-Fishing Literature Collection to supplement the current holdings on fly fishing, fly tying, aquatic entomology, fish species of importance to fly fishing, and related angling topics described by prominent fly fishing authors. To learn how you can contribute to the George Harvey Fly-Fishing Literature Collection, contact the Libraries Development Office.
Anatomical Models: Various anatomical models are now available in the Life Sciences Library for students studying human anatomy. There are approximately ten models that may be checked out at the Life Sciences Reference Desk for use within the library. They include human skulls, a complete human skeleton, eye, ear and knee models. Contact Nancy Henry if you have any questions or suggestions regarding this service.
