Atlases
The atlases are shelved in two locations. Any atlas which has
a call number ending in Q (quarto) or F (folio) is shelved in the oversize
shelving directly to the left of the reference desk. All others are
shelved in the regular stacks in the far left of the Map Library.
General Purpose Atlases The
Map Library has a wide variety of general atlases for the world and the
United States. The most current and commonly used, such as Rand
McNally Commerical Atlas and Marketing Guide, The Oxford World Atlas, and
Delorme's Pennsylvania Road Atlas, are shelved on reference stands
in the atlas area. Older editions, and the other 49 states are shelved
in the Map Library stacks. We have a sampling of US and world atlases
from the 19th and 20th Centuries. Excellent for comparing cartographic
styles, political development, propoganda and geneology.
Foreign Atlases Also available
are a wide selection of foreign atlases from every continent. Get
first hand information on Argentina, brush up on a foreign language, or
see the Soviet take on where American cities and tows are located (you
may be amused). There is a lot of information in these volumes that
just isn't available in US publications.
Historical Atlases Maps
are a critical component in teaching, interperting and understaning history
and the influence of geography on politics, economics and society.
From the Big Bang to the Atlas of the Future, the Map Library has a wealth
of historical atlases that can aid your teaching, research or just be an
interesting read. Religion, war, exploration, AIDS, slavery, antropology,
nearly any topic you can think of is covered.
Reproductions See how
man saw the world, and his fellow man, in the reprints of several classic
atlases from the Roman times, when you're likely to fall off the edge of
the world, up through the Enlightenment when exploration and scientific
breakthroughs reveal the world in it's actual form.
Environmental/Geological Atlases
Examine the physical world, plate tectonics, endangered species, weather
patterns, mineral resources. The world's eco-system has allowed life
on our planet to exist, a unique situation in our known universe, as well
as flourish. Take a look at the Earth's history, the vast wealth
of life that lives on her, and the diverse resources man kind has put to
use.
