 8. 9, rue Jacques Mawas
VN's first address in Paris, a flat of his cousin Nicolas. He arrived here on October 21, 1932. The place proved absurdly difficult to find, for no one — not even clerks at a large post office — knew the street. I had all but given up when, sitting in an old friend's drawing room, I discovered, in a pile on a coffee table, a good street reference and spotted what on a visit turned out to be a one-house lane behind a backyard. The present color of the building is pink.
