4. "Conversation Piece"

9 Maynard Street. The Nabokovs lodged here in the Spring semester of 1951, during VN's short stint at Harvard. It was sublet by May Sarton and Judith Matlack, an interesting couple foreglimpsed in "Double Talk" (1945). The lodgers shared the house with Tom Jones, the women's "fur person." My friends, who live in the house now, kindly let me take pictures of its "ramshackle quarters," but after several years the large negatives, frozen, are still waiting to be developed.
