In 1999, with Dmitri Nabokov's permission, Ljuba Tarvi planted four small evergreen shrubs around VN's tombstone that she had transported all the way from St. Petersburg, Russia by car. The regulations of the cemetery at Clarens require that no plantings grow taller than half a meter. The photograph above, taken by Tarvi in 2005, reveals that the shrubs are prospering and have not grown higher than regulations allow. Ms. Tarvi has publicly asked Nabokovians to look after the shrubs when visiting the place: they may need watering and trimming.
