Libraries Presentation Explores Deafness

University Park, PA—According to film producer Karen Kenton, "There's (not just) one way of being deaf." In the National Public Radio (NPR) documentary “Through Deaf Eyes,” she wanted to broaden people's concept of what is normal. The first comprehensive film on deaf history, it explores fundamental issues facing the deaf community, including how technology contributed to social change for deaf people and subsequently fueled the arguments on how deaf children should be educated.

On Thursday, October 11, the film, showing 8:30–10:30 a.m., and other informative sessions on the topic of deafness will be held in Foster Auditorium, 101 Pattee Library. The day's activities, titled, "The Hard of Hearing and The Deaf: The Facts," are sponsored by Library Services for Persons with Disabilities, University Libraries.

From 10:45–11:30 a.m., Josh Swiller, author of the recently published book, The Unheard: A Memoir of Deafness and Africa, will relate his sojourn to a remote African village in his quest to reconcile his deafness in an unforgiving world. Deaf by the age of four, Swiller will talk about his successful surgery for a cochlear implant and about issues facing mainstreamed deaf individuals.

Dr. Judy Albrecht will talk from 1:30–2:15 p.m., about the prevention of hearing loss through education and the use of effective hearing protectors and the rehabilitation of people with hearing loss. Albrecht has provided audiology and hearing aid services in central Pennsylvania for the last twenty years, through her private practice in State College.

Both the morning and afternoon sessions will have time allotted for questions and answers, and the day will end with a half-hour summation and informal meet the presenters. The events are free and open to the public.
