Libraries Hold Pre-game Activities

University Park, PA—The University Libraries invite football fans and others to visit the Libraries for pre-game recreation. Game Day Workshops will be offered in the Foster Auditorium, 101 Pattee Library, and will include:

September 8, 10–11 a.m. (Notre Dame game): "Google Smarter," by Michael Furlough, assistant dean for Scholarly Communications and co-director of the Office of Digital Scholarly Publishing, and Emily Rimland, information literacy librarian, Library Learning Services

Discover why Google stock trades at over $500/share—what they do that is super smart and how it shows in most of what they do. There's more to Google than search—see cool and smart things you can do with Google, and find out how Google is changing how we do our work at Penn State.

October 13, 10–11 a.m. (Wisconsin game): "History of the Lion," by Steven Herb, executive director of the Pennsylvania Center for the Book and head librarian, Education and Behavioral Sciences Library. Herb is co-author of A Lion's Tale.

Is it true that Penn State has the last known Pennsylvania mountain lion on campus and does it wear deer whiskers? Do we only have it in Pattee Library because it missed a train to Washington D.C. fifty years ago that would have incinerated it? Was the young man who called for Penn State to have the Nittany Lion as its mascot, 7 feet tall with six fingers on his throwing hand, yet was still one of the best third basemen in the state at the turn of the 19th century? This and more will help to debunk the myths and set the story straight about Penn State's mountain lion and get attendees ready to share the real tale at the next tailgate.

November 3 (The time will be dependent on football game kickoff. It will be 9 a.m., if noon game; 10 a.m., if late-afternoon game.) (Purdue game): "What's in Your Attic," by Sue Kellerman, the Judith O. Sieg Chair for Preservation and head, Digitization and Preservation Department, will show how to correctly care for and preserve precious family heirlooms and mementos. Topics will include methods for preserving, handling, and storing paper documents, books, photographs, and newspapers.

Through December 28, "A Paterno Retrospective," featuring a half-century of highlights of the illustrious Joe Paterno and his family, is on display in the main exhibit hall of Pattee Library. The exhibit is open game day as well as during regular Libraries hours.

While in the Libraries, fans are urged to pickup a Paterno commemorative bookmark. The seven-bookmark series celebrates Coach Joe Paterno's contributions to Penn State. Single bookmarks are available the Monday before each 2007 home football game at all library locations. Gifts of support to the Libraries will be acknowledged with the full, uncut sheet of the Paterno Retrospective Collector's Bookmark Series 2007.
