University Park, PAAs part of the University Libraries' continuing Graphic Novels Series, Jay Hosler will speak on "Graphic Novels in the Sciences," on Wednesday, October 10, 3 p.m. in the Foster Auditorium, 101 Pattee Library. A book signing will follow, and books will be available for purchase. Hosler's work can be viewed at www.jayhosler.com
Hosler is a graphic artist and assistant professor of biology at Juniata College in Huntington, Pennsylvania. In addition to teaching courses on neurobiology and invertebrate biology, he taught “Comics and Culture” with history professor Dave Hsiung. His book Clan Apis is a very detailed graphic novel, following the life cycle of the Honey Bee (Apis mellifera). Clan Apis was a recipient of a 1998 Xeric Award and has been nominated for 3 Eisner awards. Another of his books, The Sandwalk Adventures: An Adventure in Evolution Told in Five Chapters, is a story about Charles Darwin told from the perspective of follicle mites living in his hair. It also received Eisner nominations and has been used by faculty at Penn State in a course on evolution. Hosler is currently working on The Age of Elytra: Beetles, Bones, and the History of Life.
An exhibit, "Graphic Novels in the Science," is on view through December 28, in the Physical and Mathematical Sciences Library, 201 Davey Lab.
The presentation is sponsored by the The Charles W. Mann Jr. Lecture in the Book Arts, sponsored by the Mary Louise Krumrine Endowment, Library Learning Services, and the Pennsylvania Center for the Book.
