University Park, PAThe 1927 film short, Waring’s Pennsylvanians (No. 428), will be shown for the first time on Saturday, June 2, at 9:00 a.m., in the Foster Auditorium, 101 Pattee Library, after being restored by WPSU-TV technicians who used digital editing to synchronize picture and sound. Now, the public will be able to enjoy quality footage of the dynamic Waring’s Pennsylvanians as they sounded in the Roaring Twenties. As an added bonus for guests, one of Hollywood’s first all-talking musicals, RKO Pictures’ 1929 Syncopation, which features the band, will also be screened.
Waring's Pennsylvanians musically captured the exuberance of the post-World Wa
r I era, and used cutting-edge performance techniques to venture into film, radio, and television. Their unique combination of voices and instruments produced a sound that was all their own, leading to much success and fame over the decades. The band received top billing for Syncopation, which also features their first female performer, Dorothy Lee, along with Barbara Bennett and Morton Downey.
The films belong to the Fred Waring’s America, a collection of the Special Collections Library at Penn State, located at 313 Pattee Library. This treasure trove of historical memorabilia reflects Waring’s nearly seventy-year career as a bandleader, choral conductor, glee club pioneer, music educator, golf tournament host, and entrepreneur.
