Friday Flicks at the Physical and Mathematical Sciences Library

University Park, PA—"Friday Flicks at the Physical and Mathematical Sciences Library," begin Friday September 7, 3:35 p.m., in 211 Davey Lab (enter through 210 Davey).

September 7, "Music of the Primes—Math's Greatest Riddle, Math's Greatest Minds, Part 1: From the Greeks to Gauss" People became aware of prime numbers in the ancient world, but it wasn't until the 18th century that predicting them became possible. (28 min) and "Photonics: The Revolution in Communications" A look at the science behind communications and its importance in our society. (29 min)

September 14, ""Music of the Primes—Math's Greatest Riddle, Math's Greatest Minds, Part 2: From Riemann to Ramanujan" The next steps in the history of prime numbers as a pattern starts to emerge. (28 min.) and "Hunt for the Elusive Neutrino" Neutrino research at the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory and predictions for the future of the universe. (20 min.) 

September 21, "Music of the Primes—Math's Greatest Riddle, Math's Greatest Minds, Part 3: From Turing to Tomorrow" The history of prime numbers from Turing's cryptography machine to present. (27 min.) and "Black Holes, Pulsars, and Other Odd Bodies" An overview of several cosmic objects. (23 min.)

September 28, "The Uncertainty Principle: Making of an American Scientist" A look at physicist Keith Schwab through his years as a postdoc at Caltech. (54 min.)

October 5, "Is Anybody Out There?" A look for life on other planets. (27 min.) and "Atmospheric Hole: the History of the Ozone Layer" CFCs, including Freon, and their devastating environmental impact." (28 min.)

October 12 "Bye-Bye, Planet Pluto" The number of planets. (50 min.)

October 19, "The Copenhagen Interpretation: Quantum Physics vs. Relativity" Albert Einstein and Niels Bohr and their opposing views. (59 min.)

October 26, "Fractals: the Colors of Infinity" The Mandelbrot set and its impact. (52 min.) 

November 2 "Mysterious Poison: the History of PCBs" (28 min.) and "How Scientists Look at the Sun" (19 min.)

November 9, "The Unfolding Universe" (51 min.) 

November 16 and 23  no program scheduled

November 30, "Time Trip" Time travel and its journey from Newton to present. (50 min.)

December 7, "Super Materials" Recent breakthroughs in the development and uses for man-made materials. (46 min.)
