Summer Sports Exhibit Roars into Alumni Center

University Park, PA—Sporting events have long been etched into the minds of many as a welcome distraction during the long days of summer. "Nittany Summer: Penn State Athletes Sizzle," a photo exhibit in Robb Hall at the Hintz Alumni Center from June 5 to September 5, brings summer athletics in Happy Valley to life with a combination of colorful and historic images from the collections of the Penn State University Archives.

The exhibit primarily focuses on the past, present, and future of Penn State baseball. Fr1965 baseball gameom John “Montgomery” Ward, who first organized a team in 1875, to the Nittany Lions starting play in the brand-new Medlar Field at Lubrano Park during the 2007 season, this exhibit takes visitors through Penn State’s most memorable moments on the diamond.

Photos recalling the careers of legendary Penn State managers Joe Bedenk and Chuck Medlar join star players such as All-American Shawn Fagan, the power-hitting Dave Simononis, shutout king Mitch Lukevics and World Series champion Nate Bump in telling the story of their sport.

Penn State’s summer sports pride doesn’t end at the ballpark, as softball, tennis, golf and track and field are also represented in lively and informative photographs. Other highlights of the exhibit include an Olympic gold medalist, women’s athletics during the 1940s and more recent action shots exemplifying the excitement of Nittany Lion sports. The exhibition was curated by 2006-07 Daily Collegian Sports Editor and Archives Intern Daniel Winklebleck (Class of 2007).

The exhibit is free and is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Saturdays from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. For more information about the exhibit, contact Paul Dzyak, Sports Archivist, 814-865-7931.
