Autism Exhibition Highlights Artwork

University Park, PA—Gain new insight into autism and a better understanding of this complex disability at an exhibition titled “The World of Autism,” currently being held at the Penn State University Libraries. The exhibition features  a display ofpurple pig artwork by children and adults with autism, in Library Services for Persons with Disabilities (LSPD), 23 Pattee Library, west, through September 2; and a related informational display, in the entry lobby of Pattee Library, west, ground floor, through August 12. LSPD is open Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m., while the exhibit area in the lobby is open during usual library hours. The artwork is part of a traveling exhibition from Prism Gallery, which is devoted to providing exhibit space to people with autism.

Susan Hayya, coordinator of Library Services for Persons with Disabilities, encouraged the public to stop by and take a closer look at the exhibition, enjoy the art, and perhaps learn something new. “People will learn that while autism is a complex socially isolating disability, presenting more questions then there are answers for, it can provide in wondrous ways, such as through art or in poetry, an expression of the passions that are universally felt by all,” she said.

The exhibition coincides with the 2007 National Autism Conference, at the Penn Stater from July 30–August 3. LSPD, a division of Access Services, Penn State University Libraries, is sponsoring the event. LSPD is committed to providing services to meet the needs of disabled student, staff, and faculty in support of the academic mission of the University. It works with the University's Office of Disabilities Services and Information Technology Services.
