Buildings Transformed through Catchen's Lens

University Park, PA—"University, Government, and Commercial Buildings in Pennsylvania," a photo exhibition by Gary L. Catchen, Penn State professor of Nuclear Engineering and Architectural Photography, is on display in the Arts and Humanities Library, second floor Pattee Library, through December 15.

The exhibit consists of twenty-three 16- x 20-inch black-and-white photographs. Catchen uses elements of chiaroscuro, diverse composition, and control of perspective to create a surreal view of the design and function of a building or space, and using these elements, is able to depict buildings he describes as “inherently ugly” in a more scenic way.

The theme of the exhibition is to investigate architectural styles of a small sampling of buildings in Pennsylvania, including some from University Park—East Halls, Fenske Laboratory, and Irvin Hall; with the aim of raising questions and promoting discussion.

Catchen’s last exhibition in the Libraries was “Berlin: Diverse Architectural Viewpoints,” a striking collection of photographs of  20th-century buildings. A collection of recent examples of his black and white photography can be found at http://www.psu.edu/courses/arch/arch497_g9c/. Earlier examples of his color photography, using 35-mm format, are available at http://www.deutschlandsarchitektur.org
