First Thursday: Libraries Participate in Town/Gown Event


State College, PA — "First Thursday State College" will kick off its inaugural celebration of the arts on February 1, with exhibits, performances, and activities at locations throughout downtown State College and the Penn State campus. Modeled after “First Fridays” held in the cultural districts of cities across the United States, First Thursday will feature events at cultural institutions and art galleries on the first Thursday of each month.

Thursdays were chosen because businesses already stay open for extended hours, and parking is free that evening at all municipal street meters; the Beaver, Allen, and Fraser parking lots; and the McCallister Parking deck. Posters on the sidewalk outside each event venue will identify participants. Information will also be available on the web at www.firstthursdaystatecollege.org, a site that is currently under construction. Unless otherwise noted, admission to all First Thursday events is free and open to the public. Events for February 1, include:

The Artisan Connection
5–8 p.m.  Hors d’oeuvres and artist reception, featuring Grace Pilato and her hand-built pottery–135 E. Beaver Ave.

The Creative Oasis
3–6 p.m.  Learn to make wheel-thrown and hand-built pottery–133 E. Beaver Ave.

Douglas Albert Gallery
5–9 p.m.  Display of Spanish and French oil paintings, light refreshments, and an opportunity to register for a gallery gift card–107 McCallister Alley Walkway.

Old Main Frame Shop

5:30–8 p.m.  Display of custom framing, refreshments and music, and an opportunity for visitors to register for a drawing for gift certificates good for custom framing–136 E. College Ave.

Palmer Museum of Art
7–9 p.m.  Essence of Joy, directed by Ann Clements, assistant professor in Penn State's School of Music, to celebrate the opening of Family Legacies: The Art of Betye, Lezley and Alison Saar. RSVP by January 29 to 814-865-7673 or palmermuseum@psu—Palmer Museum of Art, Curtin Rd.


Schlow Centre Region Library

12:15–1:15 p.m.  Multimedia presentation on 50s pop culture by Bill Kelly—Downsbrough Room.

12–9 p.m.  Birthday costume party; Dress as a character from a favorite book and become eligible to win a basket of classic children’s books from the 50s (Character costume event continues through month of February; drawing is on Feb. 28)—Children’s Library.

7–8:30 p.m.  The Arthur Goldstein Jazz Quartet and birthday cake, compliments of Giant Foods, to kick off a yearlong celebration of the library’s 50th birthday —Downsbrough Room.


Penn State University Libraries

8 a.m.–9 p.m. Exhibits:

  • Celebrating Martin Luther King, Jr. and Black History Month—Pattee Library main exhibit area.
  • Graphic Novels: Comics as Art, History, and Literature—109 Pattee Library.
  • The E-Edition Newspaper Sampler —the News and Microforms Library, 21 Pattee Library, west.
  • Recent Gifts in the Arts and Humanities: Helping Penn State with Research, Teaching, and Learning—202 Pattee Library, west.
  • Audubon display, the Black-bellied Plover—the Life Sciences Library, 401 Paterno Library.
