First Thursday State College Events for July

University Park, PA—First Thursday State College will continue its celebration of the arts on July 5, with exhibits, performances, and activities at locations throughout downtown State College and the Penn State campus. Parking is free that evening at all municipal street meters, the parking lots on Fraser Street and on Beaver Avenue and Allen Street (across from Municipal Building), and the McAllister parking deck. Participating venues will be marked by sidewalk posters. Additional information is available on the web at www.firstthursdaystatecollege.org. Unless otherwise noted, admission to all First Thursday events is free and open to the public. Events for July 5 include:

 

The Artisan Connection:

5–8 p.m.: Glass Center Artists and Allegria Ensemble

Ten artists from the Pittsburgh Glass Center will feature hand-blown vessels, functional pieces, jewelry and whimsical objects. In addition, the local Allegria Ensemble, composed of cellist Claudia Koide, flutist Cathy Collinge Herrera, and violinist Debbie Trudeau, will perform and refreshments will be served—135 East Beaver Avenue. The Creative Oasis:

5:30–7 p.m.: Artist Reception: Potters of Central Pennsylvania Arts Show

In addition to the reception, learn to make wheel-thrown and hand-built pottery—133 East Beaver Avenue.

 

Douglas Albert Gallery:

11 a.m.–8:30 p.m.: Paintings of Myung Jung

Jung's lavish landscapes are done in the "impasto" style of oil painting. Heavily textured and three dimensional in both feel and look the artist’s flowers almost appear to jump off the surface of the canvas! In addition to this artist work, the Gallery will be featuring new studio glass from over a dozen American glass blowers whose work is on display throughout the year—107 McAllister Alley Walkway, across from the Tavern Restaurant.

 

Growing Tree Toys:

5:30–7:30 p.m.: Design Your Own Racecars

Children ages 5 and up can turn a wooden race car into one of their own creative design! Using paints, stickers, and imagination, kids can make one cool, really fast car—202 South Allen Street.

 

HUB and Robeson Galleries:

noon–9 p.m.: Paintings and Drawings by Ruth Talman Kazez

On display until July 18th. HUB-Robeson Center, 1st floor, Hetzel Union Building.

 

Images 2007– Presented by Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts. Robeson Gallery, Lower level, HUB-Robeson Center. On display until July 15th.

 

Paintings by David Paden–Art Alley, 1st floor, HUB-Robeson Center. On display until July 30th.

 

Kitchen Kaboodle:

5–8 p.m.: Thai Style

The art of Thai Cooking with Brooke Saepoo. Sample and learn the technique of Thai cuisine—104 West Beaver Avenue.
 

Old Main Frame Shop:

Open till 8 p.m.: 20 percent  off all framed art—136 East College Avenue.

 

Palmer Museum:

7–8:30 p.m.: View the many examples of portraiture in the Palmer Museum of Art galleries, then create a silhouette, or shadow portrait, to take home. Museum galleries are open and docents are available to discuss works of art. The museum is providing free parking in Lot Yellow E on Curtin Road for participants of First Thursday.

 

Schlow Centre Region Library:

6–7:30 p.m.: Art Alliance of Central PA Teachers' Exhibit Opening

Meet the artists and enjoy refreshments—Downsbrough Room.

 

2:30 p.m.: Mysterious Concoctions

Join the library staff for a program about slime, goop, gak, and other obnoxious creations!—library garden.

Vote for your favorite children's book. We will compile the entries and create a list of the Top 50 Favorites!—Children's Department

Tell Us Your Favorite Library Memory

Share your favorite Schlow Library memories! We will be posting your memories throughout the year in the lobby book display area. You will be eligible for an end of the year prize drawing-Children's Department & Adult Department

 

University Libraries
8 a.m.–9 p.m.: Displays from the Libraries' Special Collections including the John O'Hara study, the Marquette of the winning design for the Korean War Memorial in Washington, DC, by Penn State faculty members from the College of Art and Architecture; and a rare facsimile copy of the Book of Kells—104 Paterno Library.

Exhibits:
Roman Vishniac: Remembering the Days of Old-an exhibit that documents the lives of Jews before the Holocaust on display in the Diversity Reading Room, 109 Pattee Library.

Rails to Penn State-an exhibit that charts the growth of the Bellefonte Central Railroad—Pattee Library main exhibit area.

Film:
7–8 p.m..: Tsunami: the wave that shook the world
On December 26, 2004, a series of tidal waves killed thousands and devastated communities around the Indian Ocean. With around 100 tsunamis striking the world's coastlines each decade, Nova investigates what made this event so powerful and catastrophic—Earth and Mineral Sciences Library, 105 Deike Building. Zola New World Bistro:
5–7 p.m.: Still Life Creations

Artist Reception with light hors d'oeuvres. This exhibit features the vibrant still-life paintings and photographs by Bellefonte artist Nancy Brassington. Stop by to meet the artist—324 West College Avenue.
