First Thursday Events for August

University Park, PA— First Thursday State College will continue its celebration of the arts on August 2, with exhibits, performances, and activities at locations throughout downtown State College and the Penn State campus. Parking is free that evening at all municipal street meters, the parking lots on Fraser Street and on Beaver Avenue and Allen Street (across from Municipal Building), and the McAllister parking deck. Participating venues will be marked by sidewalk posters. Additional information is available on the web at www.firstthursdaystatecollege.org. Unless otherwise noted, admission to all First Thursday events is free and open to the public. Events for August 2 include:

The Artisan Connection:

5:30-8 p.m.: Heide Castleman Photographs and Reception. Whether they are citizens of foreign countries or intricate flowers, Castleman is able to photograph raw and provocative images. The variety in Castleman’s work is also remarkable as she is able to capture the beauty of man-made structures as well as nature’s finest creations. Castleman’s work will be on display throughout the month of August-135 East Beaver Avenue. Visit on-line at artisanconnection.com.

The Creative Oasis:

6:30-9 p.m.: The Sharing Squid & Other Curious Sketches. Opening for Eden Carnes.

5:30-7 p.m.: Demonstrations of wheel-thrown and hand-built pottery.-133 East Beaver Avenue.

 

Growing Tree Toys:

5:30-7:30 p.m.: Create a Crafty Cap. Children ages 4 and up can turn a plain baseball cap into a crafty, creative accessory piece. Kids will decorate the fabric cap using peel-and-stick felt pieces and other accessories for a completely unique hat-–202 South Allen Street.

Old Main Frame Shop:

Open till 8 p.m.: 20 percent  off on all framed art–136 East College Avenue.

Schlow Centre Region Library:

2:30-3:30 p.m.: Sock Hop– Children and their parents are invited to an hour of music, dance, and treats to celebrate Schlow's 50th Birthday! Come dance your socks off. Bring a new pair of socks to donate to the local shoe bank.  

6:30 p.m.: Sock Hop- Dance your socks off to music provided by a DJ spinning 45's and The Highway Kings, who play rockabilly and surf music. Refreshments will be served. Bring a new pair of socks to donate to the local shoe bank-Downsbrough Room.

Share your favorite Schlow Library memories! We will be posting your memories throughout the year in the lobby-book display area. You will be eligible for an end of the year prize drawing-Children's Department & Adult Department.

Exhibits

8 a.m. - 9 p.m.:

Roman Vishniac: Remembering the Days of Old-an exhibit that documents the lives of Jews before the Holocaust on display in the Diversity Reading Room, 109 Pattee Library.

Rails to Penn State-an exhibit that charts the growth of the Bellefonte Central Railroad-Pattee Library main exhibit area.

Film:
7-8 p.m.: Rafting through the Grand Canyon [videorecording] / produced by WGBH Boston, in association with the Nebraska ETV Network for Nova. (60 mins)

A voyage with geologists repeating the first voyage of John Wesley Powell down the Grand Canyon. Includes the geological story of the canyon, and the changes caused by three decades of human intervention—Earth and Mineral Sciences Library, 105 Deike Building. Phone 865-9517

 

Zola New World Bistro:
5:30-7 p.m.: Still Life Creations Exhibit-Stop by do enjoy $1 off drinks and an exhibit of vibrant still-life paintings by Bellefonte artist Nancy Brassington-324 West College Avenue.
