New Maps Librarian to Focus on Wide Spectrum of Mapping Technologies

University Park, PA—The integration of maps and geographic information systems (GIS) across disciplines has increased dramatically in recent years, says the new Head of Penn State University Libraries Maps Library, Marcy Allen. “I am very excited about creating a place where students can learn about and explore a wide spectrum of mapping technologies to enhance their education and research,” she says.

Allen has a Master of Library and Information Science from Drexel UniversitMarcyAlleny, a Master of Arts in Geography and Urban Studies from Temple University and a Bachelor of Arts in Geography from Rowan University. Before joining Penn State, she was head of the Government and Legal Information Unit at Western Illinois University. Allen’s research interests include GIS education in secondary schools and two-year institutions, the use and creation of access avenues for geospatial data, metadata, suburban sprawl issues/history, and public participation GIS.

“I have been given the very unique opportunity of developing a map library which looks to the future, and am eager to work with various entities across campus to make that happen,” she says. Penn State's Maps Library is located on the ground level of Paterno Library. For more information, go to www.libraries.psu.edu/maps
