"One Day Is Today"—Libraries display posters from Martin Luther King Jr competition

University Park, PA— “Celebrating Martin Luther King Jr. and Black History Month,” an exhibit featuring posters designed by Penn State students, is on display in the Pattee Library exhibit area January 14 through March 3, 2008. This year’s theme is One Day Is Today.'

The student posters were created in Lanny Sommese’s Art 470, Time and Sequence course. This annual exercise for Sommese’s students exposes them to real-world design, with a fixMartin Luther King Jr postered deadline, client, and prescribed project specifications. It also gets the students involved in a public service project—very important from Sommese’s perspective.

Judges from the commemoration planning committee selected a design by Heidi Yosinski, a senior graphic design major at Penn State. Her poster illustrates a silhouette of King in front of a clear and sunny sky. The storms shown within King’s face represent the turmoil within our country and the  the sky represents a new day invoking global civil rights and activism. The sunburst conveys enlightenment and reflects an uplifting positive spirit. Yosinski’s design has been duplicated on buttons and posters for Penn State’s 2008 celebration of Dr. King.
