History of University Health Services on display

University Park, PA— "In Sickness and in Health: The History of University Health Services" is on display in the HUB-Robeson Galleries' exhibit cases through September 19, 2008. This exhibit, which charts the course of University Health Services (UHS) through the decades, showcases the people, places and medical instruments of days past. In addition, a related exhibit of 32 photographs is on display in Robb Hall, Hintz Alumni Center. This exhibit, organized by Jackie Esposito, University archivist, and Alston Turchetta, archives assistant, includes a rendering of the new health center. Both exhibits showcase historical black and white photographs from the collections of the University Archives. The exhibits coincide with the move of UHS and Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) to the new Student Health Center, and will be of interest to visitors who want to learn more about the changing needs of student health care from Penn State's early years to the present day.

Student health care has changed in many ways over the decades. In addition to treating seasonal afflictions such as the flu and the occasional broken bone, health-care providers now face complex issues such as sexual health, alcohol abuse and eating disorders. The number of students attending Penn State has grown exponentially. In the 1950s when two wings were added to Ritenour building, the student population numbered 15,000. Today there are over 42,000 students at University Park alone. The state-of-the-art 64,000 square foot Student Health Center will provide UHS with a much-needed space to better serve Penn State students in the future.
