Alumni Library features leisure reading, sports archives, more
University Park, PAThe latest "edition" of Penn State's Alumni Library at http://alumni.libraries.psu.edu, features the old, the new, and the futuristic. Highlights for this edition include top reading picks for the new Leisure Reading Collection, located in Course Reserves, on the first floor of Pattee Library. This collection comprises fiction and non-fiction bestsellers and award winning books, and was established at the request of Penn State students who were seeking enjoyable, current reads. Also featured in this edition are the "21st Century Librarians," with a spotlight on a new generation of librarians at Penn State, who utilize an array of Web 2.0 technologies to interact with students.
For readers interested in historical Penn State sports-related materials, there is an article about the resources of the Libraries' sports archives. The University Archives Sports Audio-Visual Collection contains film, videotape and digital materials dating back to the late 1920s. In addition to football games, the collection also covers many other sports, including men's and women's basketball, men's and women's gymnastics, ice hockey, and men's soccer. This article shows how to locate the materials, and how to find out about purchasing VHS or DVD copies for in-home use.
Finally, in the "Just Browsing" column, Penn State Altoona Librarian Jeff Knapp shares his online finds of curious past images of the future. "The future is always so full of promise," writes Knapp, while also noting, "I find it humorous looking at the things that are never considered as capable of change."
In addition to the current offerings, the Alumni Library also has many other resources, including recipes from Cookin' with the Lion, online horticultural resources from Penn State and other sites, and much more.
Penn State University Libraries, with more than 5 million volumes, 5 million microforms, 68,000 serial subscriptions, 500 online databases and 15,000 e-journals, most of which have full-text articles, constitute a major resource for students, faculty and staff, as well as residents of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The largest research library in Pennsylvania, it is one of four resource libraries that provide service and collections to all other libraries and citizens of the commonwealth.
